Parents and Grandparents Program to Open Late July 2025

Vancouver, BC  —

Canada immigration has announced that the highly anticipated Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) will officially open for its 2025 intake in late July. This popular Canada visa application stream allows eligible Canadians and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents for Canada PR—but the program remains one of the most competitive pathways due to its limited spots and randomized invitation system.

What’s New for PGP 2025?

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) confirmed that invitations to apply under the Parents and Grandparents Program will begin rolling out later this month. IRCC plans to send 17,860 invitations, aiming to receive up to 10,000 complete sponsorship applications.

Key points:

·       Invitations will go to people who submitted an Interest to Sponsor form in 2020 and have not yet been invited.

·       There will be no new intake forms this year—so if you didn’t submit in 2020, you’ll have to wait for the next round.

·       Selected applicants will have 30 days to submit their full Canada visa application once invited.

PGP 2025: Who Can Sponsor?

To sponsor a parent or grandparent for Canada PR under the PGP, you must:

·       Be at least 18 years old.

·       Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered under the Canadian Indian Act.

·       Live in Canada.

·       Meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for 3 consecutive tax years prior to applying. Sponsors must provide Notices of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency as proof.

·       Sign an undertaking promising to financially support the parent or grandparent for 20 years (or 10 years if living in Quebec).

PGP Application Process: Step by Step

1.     Interest to Sponsor:
Only people who submitted an Interest to Sponsor form in 2020 are eligible for the 2025 draw.

2.     Invitation to Apply:
If selected, you’ll receive an invitation from IRCC by email. Check your spam folder regularly during the announcement period!

3.     Submit Application:
If invited, you have 30 days to submit your complete Canada visa application, including forms, income documents, relationship proofs, police certificates, and medical exams.

4.     Undertaking Assessment:
IRCC reviews your application and the undertaking to ensure you meet all eligibility and income requirements.

5.     Processing Time:
PGP processing can take 36–48 months, depending on your situation and whether additional documents are requested.

PGP vs Super Visa: A Quick Reminder

Can’t apply for PGP this round? The Super Visa is another great option for family reunification under Canada immigration rules. It allows parents and grandparents to visit Canada for up to 5 years at a time, with multiple entries for up to 10 years. Unlike PGP, the Super Visa does not grant Canada PR, but it’s often faster and more flexible.
